How to be an activist

Have you ever filled out one of those on-line political compass tests for fun and found out that you are an anarchist? Yes? Well, that happened to me, too, so then I had to find out more about exactly what is meant by the term anarchy. It comes from the ancient Greek word anarchia meaning without rulers. It implies being anti-government but what about a more utopian view of democracy where everyone participates? In his book, The Activists' Handbook: A step-by-step guide to participatory democracyAidan Ricketts has produced a practical guide of essential tools and tips for the potential activist in all of us. Ricketts is an experienced social and environmental activist who believes in real democracy and the power of the people. His goal is to inspire and empower people to take a stand and make a difference. He believes that people will feel transformed when they overcome their passivity, take full responsibility and stop relying on governments. This book is based on Ricketts' extensive experience and he has developed resources to guide other activists in tackling the world's problems. You will learn how to build a successful social movement and effective strategy and planning for your compaign. Find tips on how to increase publicity and public awareness, staging protests and direct actions as well as emerging opportunities through digital activism. And very useful advice on how to avoid activist burnout!

There will be an Anarchist, Dan Sawyer, that is taking part in the Human Library in Ottawa on Saturday, January 25 at Greenboro Library. He has experience organizing campaigns for direct-action and has been involved in marches. Check him out!
