Nancy Drew was one of my childhood companions. How could a girl not like a title like The Clue of the Whistling Bagpipes or The Secret of the Old Clock?
The first Nancy Drew mystery was published in 1930, and evolved into The Nancy Drew Files and Girl Detective. Now there is an interactive game website, an online fan club and Nancy Drew Facebook pages where friends talk nostalgically about the first Nancy Drew game they played.
The language style of the early books may seem archaic to girls now but young readers were exposed to descriptive vocabulary.
“The girls wielded the brooms vigorously on the burning hillside and within half an hour they had extinguished the centermost point of the blaze.” Or “At intervals there were oblong openings with stone slabs laid crosswise in them like floors.”
Ah the good old days!
While technology crowds its way into library work, staff is still talking about books.
If you are a Nancy Drew fan or you have another favorite character to share you’ll have the attention of this reader.
