Nancy Drew mysteries by Carolyn Keene

Nancy Drew mysteries are great, but not because they’re really detailed, up-to-date, or have wonderful fancy covers. But I do love Nancy Drew!

So here’s why:

1. Usually it’s a bad thing for books to be predictable, but honestly that’s one of the things I love the most about this book series. It follows a very specific pattern of: Nancy is given a case, Nancy and her friends (who for some reason are never in school) fly out to wherever there is trouble, Nancy and her friends meet some kind people who let them stay at their house/inn/hostel/farm, Nancy and her friends go searching for clues, discover a lead, and run into a hostile person/group of people who don’t want them to solve the case for whatever reason, they continue anyway, Nancy receives a threatening phone call/message/is kidnapped and is told to stop working on the mystery, continues anyway, solves the case. It’s very simple, but there’s something about knowing exactly what’s going to happen next that makes it feel so familiar and comfortable.

2. It’s really interesting to read books written in a different time that are still relatable and enjoyable today. It makes the 1930’s seems a little bit more real to someone who was born 70 years later. From the cover art (by Russell H. Tandy) and language used, to the very different social norms, it’s clearly a bit outdated, but that doesn’t mean it’s not absolutely enjoyable. Back then, Nancy was a role model for girls who were still living in a world that was telling them they were less important simply because of their gender. Though some of the things in her stories are not relevant anymore, it still gives us insight into what the world thought in the 1930’s.

The Nancy Drew mysteries by Carolyn Keene are classics, and I would definitely recommend reading at least one of the 64 yellow-spined stories before summer is over!

I totally agree with everything you said, but don't you find Nancy to be a little too prefect, a little too unrealistic? She's amazing at everything she does and attempts, everyone loves her, and she gets all the guys. Tell me what you think.
