For 27 years The Great Canadian Song-Along has been an annual highlight of Ottawa's music scene. Writers create and perform new songs on one of four given topics. This year's live concerts were scheduled for April 3 and 4 but have, of course, been cancelled. Producer Howie Hooper, a Spirit of Rasputin's regular, planned to replace it with a radio show on CKCU FM, to be called The Great Canadian Song-a-Long-Distance.
Then the station's normal operations were suspended. But with the help of broadcaster Chris White, and with many submissions from songwriters ready to go, Howie found a way to make it happen after all.
Chris, the host of CKCU's Canadian Spaces, has launched a Facebook live video show called Canadian Faces. The Great Canadian Song-a-Long-Distance is a weekly segment within the show, and includes the new songs as recorded by the artists, as well as interviews and live performances.
