Timothy Snyder Should Learn Something about PPPs

Sean Archer spoke first about a new graphic edition of Timothy Snyder’s “On Tyranny”. I watched an interview with Professor Snyder on the publication of the graphic edition and was not impressed. His comparisons of GDP per capita in the US and Ukraine were garbage. The IMF estimates American GDP per capita on a PPP basis at $76,027 in 2022, which is pretty close to Snyder’s $70,000 estimate. However, GDP per capita on a PPP basis for Ukraine in 2021, the most recent year available, was $14,325, or more than double Snyder’s $5,000 to $6,000 estimate. Snyder was obviously using market-exchange-rate (MER) estimates, which are garbage for comparing two countries with such different wage levels as the US and Ukraine. It is odd, because he obviously likes Ukrainians, so it is hard to understand why he would want to make their wage levels look much lower than they are.
