My Fairy Godmother Is a Drag Queen by David Clawson --- Teen Book Review

Prom season is just around the corner! What better way to get into the spirit than with a hilarious, witty, contemporary novel? David Clawson’s My Fairy Godmother Is a Drag Queen is a must read this Spring! Doesn’t matter what your sexual orientation is, everyone will have a good laugh while reading this book!

This Cinderella retelling introduces you to the fiercest Godmother that anyone could ask for; Coco Chanel Jones! When Chris meets Duane aka Coco Chanel Jones on the night of The Autumnal Ball, his life changes forever, and in a good way. This novel explores teen concerns such as sexuality, family and financial difficulties, and self-discovery. While attempting to survive being the only step-child in the A-List climbing Fontaine family, Chris feels more like a housekeeper than a family member. Throughout the novel and with the help of Coco, Chris begins to feel comfortable in his own skin and discovers his path within his family dynamics.

A few instances crude and rude humour are used. However, at the same time it examines and illustrates how individuals coheres with one another in an open-minded LGTBQ+ setting. For example, Coco states to Chris: “Oh, nothing, you said the name J.J. Kennerly. That man is so beautiful, I just had to take a moment to picture him. Although probably not a good idea while I’m tucked, if you know what I mean” (Clawson: pg.25). Other times there is offensive humour demonstrated between Buck, Chris’ step-brother, and Chris. These are minor setbacks as it also brings life, personality, and truthfulness to this entertaining novel. At times I was thinking to myself how this storyline is going in the typical Cinderella fairytale direction. Nevertheless, David Clawson surprised me with the story’s twists and turns in order to make this retelling dynamic while involving a positive LGTBQ+ atmosphere.

I really, really, REALLY enjoyed this novel! I would rate My Fairy Godmother Is a Drag Queen book 4.5 stars out of 5 stars. There are two reasons why I didn’t give this novel a full five stars. The first is that I know some readers will find the comedy used within the novel to be too much for their comfort level (not for me though! Hahaha!). Second, because I am anxiously waiting and hoping there will be a follow up novel on J.J. and Chris’ love affair. What happens next!?! This novel makes me want to go see my friend Bruce aka Ivanna perform in drag ASAP! If you are interested in drag or wanting to learn more about the drag experience, on June 4th at Westfest 2017, Jacques aka PomponMinoune will have an in-audience transformation from male to female representation through makeup, hair, duct tape, and oversized shoes! Have Fun! Live Life! And Enjoy!
