Indigenous Book Club – featuring author Patti LaBoucane-Benson

The Ottawa Public Library’s Indigenous Book Club is hosting an online book chat between June 12 and 14.

The English book featured is The Outside Circle by Métis writer Patti LaBoucane-Benson.  It is a powerful story of a man involved in gang violence who ends up in jail. While incarcerated he undertakes a journey of self discovery and healing.

In this interview on TVO’s The Agenda with Steve Paikin, author Patti LaBoucane-Benson talks about the lack of knowledge Canadians have about Aboriginal history, such as the Sixties Scoop. It was one of the reasons that she wrote The Outside Circle.  She chose the graphic novel format because “anybody can pick it up and read it in an hour, an hour and a half, and have the full impact of the story”.

Find the time to read this moving graphic novel and participate in our online book chats:

·         Monday, June 12 at 12:00 p.m. with Vera Wabegijig, a nishnaabe poet, blogger, and anishnaabe language enthusiast.

·         Tuesday, June 13 at 7:15 pm with Patti LaBoucane-Benson, author of The Outside Circle.

Which book by an Indigenous author have you read that helped you learn more about the history of Aboriginal people?

Comment below or on OPL’s Facebook page, by answering the above question, and get a chance to win two tickets to the Buffy Sainte-Marie concert at the National Arts Centre on Monday, July 3.

Good luck!
