Innocents are found dead.

A monster is terrorizing the kingdom of Lochlannach sending it into chaos. In desperation, the king sends out a royal decree to all lands of Eurona - kill the beast and my daughter, the princess, is yours to marry. Now, hundreds of hunters are readying themselves for the Great Hunt - much to Princess Aerity’s dismay. That is, until local hunter Paxton Seabolt catches her attention. But what are the chances of him winning the spot that everyone is willing to kill for?

The Great Hunt by Wendy Higgins is a high fantasy fairy tale retelling of the Brothers Grimm story “The Singing Bone”. The princess is a kind and likeable character. However, I had mixed feelings about the brooding Paxton. I won’t say much except that he meets the expectations of a YA male protagonist. The plot is action packed and well crafted. Overall, this unique read can be summed up through one word: unexpected.

I give this novel 2.5 out of 5 stars and would recommend it to readers looking for a forbidden romance with dark twists.  This book is recommended for readers ages 13 and up.

*Note: The Great Hunt is the first novel in the Eurona duology. It is followed by The Great Pursuit released in March 2017.
