This image shows part of the cover for the book The English Patient

The English Patient, by Canadian author Michael Ondaatje, won the Man Booker Prize in 1992; it was made into an Academy Award winning film in 1996; now in 2018 it wins the wonderful honour of being voted by the public for the Golden Man Booker Prize.  A humbled Ondaatje gave credit to the late film director, Anthony Minghella, for bringing the novel to the screen, and having "something to do with the result of this vote".  One of the judges, Kamila Shamsie expressed how deserving this novel is, with its extraordinary language, and strong female characters: it has "great humanity written into every page".

The Golden Man Booker marks the half century for the Booker literary prize, an enormously influential one to win.  52 former winners were considered by 5 judges, who were each assigned a decade of reading.  Out of these, 5 books were chosen for the public's consideration, and include: In a Free State by V.S. Naipaul (the 70s) Moon Tiger by Penelope Lively (the 80s), Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall (2000s)and Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders. (the 2010s).

A previous winner for the "Best of Bookers" went to Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children.

Line yourself up for a lot of award winning reading this summer!
