    Pregnancy Circles offer pregnant individuals a place to learn how to care for your baby and to talk about concerns about your pregnancy with a Public Health Nurse. It is also an opportunity to connect with others and share experiences.

    Specific topics will include:

    • Being pregnant
    • Healthy eating and active living
    • Safe pregnancy
    • Birth basics
    • Feeding your baby
    • Preparing for parenthood
    • And more!

    The program at the North Gloucester location is only being offered in English. The program is offered in 2-hour sessions, weekly, for 6 weeks. All sessions are available at no cost!

    Due to limited space, the sessions are currently for pregnant individuals only.

    Steve Patterson: Keynote Comedian

    Celebrating the joy of reading and the love of laughter 

    October is Canadian Library Month, where libraries across Canada raise awareness of the valuable role libraries play in Canadians’ lives. This year, Ottawa Public Library is embracing the theme of Joy of Reading/Joie de lire, with comedian and author, Steve Patterson, whose joie de vivre’ is correlated to his joie de lire. As host of The Debaters, now in its 19thseason on CBC Radio One, Steve Patterson brings his award-winning comedy to our keynote stage with a one-of-a-kind performance. Incorporating material from current events, his extensive comedy travels across Canada and the world, and his experience of being an older dad to two young (and vibrant, story-loving) daughters, Steve Patterson: The Keynote Comedian promises to make our Ottawa Public Libraraudience laugh, think, or at least think about laughing while we collectively share in our joy of reading. 

     About the speaker: 

    Steve Patterson is an award-winning comedian with over two decades of international performance experienceBest known as host of the long-running hit radio show and podcast The Debaters and theatre show The Debaters LivePatterson’s brand of comedy is best described as honest and erudite combining well-crafted writing with unparalleled off-the-cuff wit. Twice named Canada’s Best Male Stand-Up at the Canadian Comedy Awards, Steve has also taken his award-winning humour to the literary world with The Book of Letters I Didn’t Know Where to Send and Dad Up!.  

    The Spaniel's Tale will be at the event selling Steve Patterson's books and a catered selection of titles that celebrate reading and libraries.

    Explore science through Carleton University’s popular Science Cafés. Put on by the Faculty of Science. 

    You are invited to join us for lively discussions around a scientific issue of the day. Be prepared to be informed, engaged and entertained, as our professors share their scientific discoveries and research with you. Each Café includes a 30 to 40 minute talk by a scientist followed by a moderated question and answer period.

    The Science Café series is free to attend and all are welcome!

    October topic: Our dark (Matter) Universe

    Dark forces are afoot in the universe!  The stars in our galaxy are rotating faster than originally expected. Galaxy clusters collide in unusual ways. The photons originating from the first milliseconds of our universe move as if the space is filled with something we cannot see but they can feel. This unseen substance is called dark matter and it makes up a quarter of the energy budget of our universe. But what is it? Is it similar to electrons and protons? Does it interact with the electromagnetic force or other forces? We know dark matter exists but we do not know the answers to these and other questions about its origins. I will present our current theoretical understanding about dark matter (and other dark forces) and will discuss how we are searching for it. Our journey for discovering dark matter will go from the mines in Sudbury to the center of our galaxy and to galaxies far far away, and will span all ages of our universe’s 13.7 billion years old history.

    Join Eisner Award winning cartoonist Faith Erin Hicks as she dives into the process of making comics, from script to drawing and beyond. She will show young creators how they too can make comics. The only tools needed are a pencil, paper and an idea! Faith will also give a drawing demonstration with audience participation.

    This workshop is aimed at teens ages 13-18. 

    Faith Erin Hicks is a writer and artist living in Vancouver, British Columbia. Her published works include The Adventures of Superhero Girl, Friends with Boys, The Nameless City trilogy, Pumpkinheads (with Rainbow Rowell), One Year at Ellsmere and the young adult novel Comics Will Break Your Heart. She has won two Eisner Awards, and Pumpkinheads was a New York Times bestseller.
