Comics creators nicole burton and Hugh Goldring of Ad Astra Comix will be offering a workshop on creating Pride-themed comics. If you’re interested in comic books but don’t know where to start, this workshop is for you! Participants will be encouraged to illustrate during the workshop, and work will be discussed in a supportive environment.
This workshop is open to teens ages 13 to 17, and all materials will be provided. All you need is an open mind and your creativity!
Ad Astra Comix
Based in Ottawa since 2015, they co-founded the Ad Astra Comix publishing collective, specializing in comics and art with social justice themes. The press published 6 books and a number of pamphlets, posters, and web comics over 7 years of activity. In 2018, they created Petroglyph, an original comics studio that collaborates with scholars from around the world to turn research findings into stunning visuals with compelling narratives- into comics that people actually want to read!
About the artists
nicole marie burton (she/they) is a genderfluid pansexual artist living on unceded Algonquin lands. Her published work includes a number of children's and YA books, as well as adult-themed graphic novels like "Wonder Drug", "The Beast: Making a Living on a Dying Planet" and "Enemy Alien" about the internment of Ukrainian nationals in Canada during WWI.
Hugh Goldring (they / them) is a writer based in Ottawa, Ontario, in traditional Algonquin territory. They are a partner at Petroglyph Studios, which specializes in adapting scholarship with social justice themes for academics, unions, NGOs and other civil society groups. Their work has been used in workshops, lectures, refugee camps and union organizing. Their most recent full length graphic novel, 'Wonder Drug', is available through Between the Lines Books
